Anonymous FTP

Anonymous FTP is the ability to upload and/or download files from a server without having a login username and password. For security reasons, we only allow anonymous FTP to specific directories.

After anonymous FTP is setup, it will create a directory called $domain-anonftp in the user's home directory. This directory will by default contain the following directories:

/bin /dev /etc /lib /pub

The only directory that is used is the "pub" directory. This is where the user should put files that they want to have visitors anonymously download. Visitors can access this directory via a browser by going to:

ftp://yourdomain.com/pub

Note: For security reasons, do not allow clients the ability to allow users to both upload and download to the same directory. You are responsible for moving files from the incoming directory to the pub directory if you wish for uploaded files to be later downloaded. To get an incoming directory, contact support.

The incoming directory would be:

ftp://yourdomain.com/incoming

This directory is writable from the web but NOT readable. No one coming in from the web (or from an FTP program logging in as "anonymous") can see what files are stored here.

This can be useful for resellers who want to allow their clients to update their pages but don't want to give them full FTP access. The clients would upload to ftp://yourdomain.com/incoming and the reseller would move the files into /home/$user/$domain-www.

The Anonymous FTP icon in your Control Panel only allows you to install or remove anonymous FTP capabilities for your site.

To make use of Anonymous FTP, your users would need to use an FTP program (such as WS-FTP or Cute FTP).
