FTP
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, and it's a way to upload
files from your computer to our server and vice versa. If you've
never used an FTP program before, don't worry; they're very easy
to use.
Note: Uploading Your Site Using MS FrontPage or
Publisher
Please note that our Control Panel Manual contains separate instructions
on how to upload your site if you are using Microsoft's FrontPage
or Publisher.
See those sections for more information.
If your HTML editor offers a built-in "upload" or "publish"
feature, you can use that.
Otherwise, you can use a stand-alone FTP program. A popular, free FTP program
for the PC is SmartFTP.
From the SmartFTP site, you can see screenshots
and download
the program, and even visit their support
forum. A terrific alternate program is CuteFTP.
Although it's not free, it's very intuitive for beginners and full
of features for more advanced users. If you're using a Mac, we recommend
Fetch.
If you want more options, visit CNet.com and review a whole range of
FTP programs for
the PC and for
the Mac.
Uploading Your Site
The directions here are for CuteFTP,
but they are similar to the steps you'll use regardless of
which program you're using. Basically, all FTP programs require
two major steps:
- You tell the program how to log in to the server.
- You connect and upload your files.
When
you create a new site in CuteFTP's site manager, the program will
ask for the following information:
FTP Host Address: your_domain_name.com (or
IP address)
FTP Site User Name: your_user_name
FTP Site Password: your_password
Edit the site to indicate the:
Default Remote Directory:
your_domain_name-www
You received your user name and password in your "Welcome
to Harris Media" email when you set up your account. You can
ignore the other fields.
When your site is set up, hit the Connect button. Once you've connected
to the server, the files on your hard drive appear on the left;
the files on the server appear on the right.
With CuteFTP, you just select the files you want to upload and
drag them to the other side. When you want to download files, you
do the same thing in the opposite direction. Make sure you're dragging
in the direction you want to go in. You can use the same directory
structure you used on your computer when creating your web site.
Just make sure you're uploading your site's files into the directory
called your_domain_name-www.
After you have uploaded your files, go to your web site using your
browser and review the files online.

User's Forum.
Troubleshooting
If you do not see your site, check the following:
- Did you upload into the right directory?
- Did you name your home page index.html or index.htm?
- Did you delete the default placeholder page called index.html
that we set up on your server when you opened your account?
- Did you hit the Refresh or Reload button in your browser to make
sure you are seeing the newly uploaded pages?
